Recovering from Burnout

Burnout is a funny thing

It’s hard to quantify

But giving the brain a mental break

Is sure to rectify.

14 years a teacher

In schools counted as “rather rough.”

Allowed me to know my students

And their lives – so different to mine.

To say I coped would be a lie

I held it all inside

Until an opportunity arrived

And I got the gift of time.

Time allowed me to record their tales

Of woe, despair and joy

And now my brain has received

A reprieve from all this guff.

So take my advice

To all burnt out teachers

Take a break before you decide

To leave the job, the angst and drama,

To leave it all behind.
